This guide details the steps for creating a new VM instance using a Volume in your mCloud Dashboard.

Prerequisites

Before you create a new VM want to ensure that you have an SSH Key-Pair available to add to the VM this will help in gaining access to the new VM. Without an SSH Key-Pair connections will be difficult. For more information on how this can be done please see our guide here

Method

1. Log into mCloud at https://mcloud.micron21.com/

2. Navigate to Project > Compute > Instances

3. Click "Launch Instance"

4. Enter your preferred Instance Name, then select the appropriate Availability Zone, this will be Kilsyth in most cases, then Click Next

   1. 

5. Set boot source to Volume.

6. Set the “volume to be deleted with the instance” option (we recommend setting this to "No").

7. Scroll down and select which existing volume you wish you use. Then Click Next

8. On the Flavor page, you can select the VM’s Resource Limits. Click the Up-Arrow next to the desired Flavor to allocate the resources to the VM. Then Click Next

9. Select the network/s you would like associated with the Instance (Public, VLAN etc.) Then click Next

10. On the Network Ports page you can configure specific Network ports as required, if you do not have any specific port requirements, you can click Next to proceed without making any changes

11. On the Security Groups page, select all applicable groups required, then click Next (in most cases this can be left blank)

12. Select which key pair you wish to use to connect to the default user and click Next.

    1. Important: If you do not have an SSH Key Pair configured we recommend that you set one at this stage. Without an SSH Key, connecting to the VM will prove difficult. For details on how you can do so, please follow the guide here

13. If you have any cloud-init configuration you wish to add you can do so here and click Next.

14. Click Launch Instance, and wait for the deployment to complete and the new instance will be available in the Cloud Dashboard via Project > Compute > Instances

    1. This should take around 1 minute, depending on the size of the image.
